Lessons In The Dark

Mary Ellen Campagna: Author | Educator
Welcome!

My name is Mary Ellen Campagna, and I created Lessons in the Dark, a collection of podcasts and YouTube videos to explore the American education system in the modern era, and how it got there.

My goals:

I created this brand with two primary, if ambitious, goals. First, I want this to be a resource for teachers, parents, students, and other citizens providing valuable information about what’s really going on behind the brick walls of the current educational system in America. Secondly, I want to create a place where I can share my insights as to how we got here, and suggestions regarding ways that we can make positive change, and hopefully inspire a dialog about education.

Why me?

I have been teaching since the mid-1990s as a volunteer in my daughter’s school and as a teachers’ assistant. I became a licensed high school teacher in 2003 after earning a B.A. in English from Hollins University and a Master’s in Liberal Arts Studies from Hollins in 2000 and 2002. I went on to complete 15 postgraduate hours in education from the University of Virginia in 2003. I have taught grades K through community college, but I’ve spent most of the last few decades teaching high school and middle school language arts. I am currently licensed to teach high school English in Arizona. I have some experience teaching emotionally disturbed (ED) kids, learning disabled (LD) kids, and English language learners or (ELL) students. I taught International
Baccalaureate students in Virginia as well as dual-enrollment students in cooperation with a local community college. I also taught high school Standards of Learning (SOL) prep courses. I taught in three states and in Asia, where I was chief foreign teacher of a private school in Jinhae, South Korea.

In addition, I was a freelance journalist from 1984 to 2017. I also earned my Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) certification in 2008 and worked for several years with chronically mentally ill adults. I have a daughter who tested as gifted in elementary school and a son with a serious learning
disability. Both graduated from high school with honors. My daughter earned her master’s in education last year. My son was given an opportunity to attend college but chose to go to work immediately after high school.
